Naval Mine Detected in Strait of Hormuz Waters
Oman's Maritime Security Center disclosed the find on Saturday, confirming the mine was detected west of the inshore traffic zone in the strait. In an urgent post on X, the center issued an immediate public warning to all maritime traffic in the region.
"All seafarers, fishermen, and vessels to exercise the utmost caution while navigating, to stay away from any suspicious objects, and to report them immediately to the relevant authorities," the center said.
The discovery intensifies concerns over the security of a waterway already under severe strain. Regional hostilities erupted after the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran in February, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks against Israel and US allies across the Gulf — and to shut down the strait entirely.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation came into force on April 8 and was subsequently extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump. However, Washington's blockade on Iranian ports along the strait remains in place, and diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting resolution are ongoing.
The mine detection adds a dangerous new dimension to an already fragile security environment surrounding the waterway that handles a critical share of global energy shipments.
